Times are tough in Ireland right now, with the ramifications of Covid-19 touching every household and every business. Amidst this, the housing charity Respond, an Approved Housing Body (AHB), has provided some much needed good news, reporting that it is ahead of target in the delivery of 700 new homes this year, which is 200 more than its initial target.
Beauchamps are truly proud to work with Respond in their delivery of new homes – the acute need for far greater housing provision is an issue that is not going to go away, no matter what the future holds for Ireland's economy. Indeed, with the economic impact predicted to decline in the coming months, and as Government support for businesses and workers is phased down, the need for social housing in particular is only going to become more acute as job losses begin to bite.
That is why it is to be applauded how Respond, along with their construction industry partners, the Department of Housing and local authorities, have kept going in the face of the Covid-19 storm, and worked hard to counter time lost during the lockdown. Respond currently has 1,288 homes under construction across 18 counties, and is on track to deliver 700 new homes each year for the next five years. That is a lot of extra homes for families and those in emergency accommodation to move into as soon as possible.
With over 40% of social housing provided by AHBs in 2019, amounting to over 4,000 homes across the country, their ability to provide appropriate housing that Ireland so badly needs is hugely significant in tackling the housing crisis. We at Beauchamps will continue to do all we can to support this vital work.
