The Regulated Professionals (Health and Social Care) (Amendment) Bill 2019 (the Bill) is back before the Dáil on Wednesday 7 October 2020 having passed through all stages in the Seanad.
The Bill, first published in 2019, is a step closer to being signed into law. Should the Dáil accept any amendments by the Seanad and pass the Bill, the Bill will be sent to the President for signature.
The Bill encompasses several amendments to the legislative framework of various professional regulators, including the Medical Council, the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, the Dental Council and CORU (the regulator for health and social care professionals). The much-anticipated amendments cover a wide array of issues, including:
- streamlining disciplinary processes;
- publication of sanctions and rights of appeal;
- declarations on registration;
- additional complaint grounds and amended complaints screening; and
- powers to request information.
